On June 21, it’s that time again, the summer solstice. The longest day and shortest night of the year has always awoken awe in different cultures around the world. Just from the biology standpoint the additional sunlight hours noticeably increases the release of serotonin, the hormone that makes us feel motivated, cheerful, and social. This connects different population in the world with their different traditions and ways of celebrate the Sun:
How the World Celebrates the Longest Day
From Scandinavia to Spain
In Scandinavia, people celebrate Midsommar, with flower crowns, picnics, and dancing around the maypole, often until the early morning hours. This has even made it into the cinema, in the famous horrow movie Midsommar.
In Spain, during Noche de San Juan, people light large bonfires on the beach, jump over the flames, and throw their wishes into the fire. People from all ages gather for this moment, sharing food, drinks and burn the things they want to leave behind (as a fun fact, students burn their notes from the year, since this celebration coincides with the end of the scholar year).
In Latvia, Ligo is celebrated, a festival full of songs, wreaths, and campfires. In Great Britain, people gather every year to watch the sunrise through the stone circle. And in Germany, Johannisfeuer, herb bundles, and small summer festivals are typical customs. Each tradition has its own magic, yet all share the same feeling of togetherness.
From China to Australia
And not only in Europe this is celebrated:
China, the Xiàzhì is celebrated nationally, exchanging colorful fans and sachets, and having cold nuddles (As the popular saying goes, “Dumplings for Winter Solstice, noodles for Summer Solstice.”) between other traditions.
India, a mass yoga session is holded, due to the belied of being the anniversary of Adiyogi (the fist yogi) meeting his disciples. And in different parts of
Australia, different traditions, from ecstatic dance and yoga sessions to traditional pagand and wiccan Kutha festivals are hold.
